You might wonder why I’m inspired to write about a dog. It’s because of my profound love for these incredible companions! What makes this particular dog so remarkable? According to The Register Citizen, Alamo has joined the ranks as the newest K9 recruit for the New Milford Police Department. At just 16 months old and weighing 60 pounds, this beautiful black Labrador Retriever embodies the spirit of loyalty and service.

I proudly call New Milford Police Officer John Legan a friend, and I can confidently say he is the ideal handler for Alamo. While Officer Legan is on duty responding to calls, Alamo remains at the New Milford police station, where he plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of the officers. When he’s not on the job, Alamo lives with Legan, his family, and their energetic 5-month-old black lab, Letty, creating a strong bond that enhances their teamwork both at work and at home.

Legan shared with The Register Citizen, "Just having him in roll call really lightens the mood." True story...My nephew, who's a Police Lieutenant in upstate New York, chooses to work the overnight shift. He's told me that police officers endure countless traumatic events over their careers. This is one of the many reasons the NM Police Department has recruited Alamo, a facility dog trained through the Puppies Behind Bars program, which helps embody hope and dedication to officer wellness, community outreach, and victim support.

In early February, Officer Legan took the initiative to collaborate with Puppies Behind Bars at the Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon, NY. Incarcerated individuals volunteer to actively participate in this program, committing themselves to prioritize the care and training of puppies. Their mission is to produce some of the finest working dogs in the country.

Alamo was specially trained to offer solace to individuals and police officers in disturbing, high-stress situations. After Legan and his new partner completed their rigorous training, Alamo proudly became a vital part of the New Milford Police Department, ready to uplift and support those in need.
