Anytime I pass a ginormous house on the road, I always picture what life would be like if that was mine. When I was younger, I dreamed about a huge house and the excitement that comes along with it, but now? That's too many rooms to clean and way too much space to decorate. I'll take a cozy home instead.

That doesn't mean I don't like to look, though. And man some of the houses are outrageous. You can drive through the wealthy parts of Connecticut and see some absolutely gorgeous homes. It got me thinking, where are the biggest homes in the country?

24/7 Wall St. recently put together a list of the largest homes in America, and it took me by surprise to see that many were not far at all from Greater Danbury. None in Connecticut made the list, but I feel if we added a few more, we may have been on there.

Coming in at number 15 was the Woodlea home located in Briarcliff Manor, New York. The house is 70,000 square feet and has a total of 140 rooms. Imagine all of the decorating you would need to do? Danbury to Briarcliff Manor is only a 45 minute drive.

Number 14 was the Idle Hour home which is also located in New York. The house is 70,000 square feet and was once owned by the Vanderbuilt family. Coming in at Number 12 is the Indian Neck Hall home which is 75,000 square feet. According to the article, when it was originally built, it was the largest home on Long Island.

The 6th largest house in America is the Arden House which was built in Harriman, New York. The house is 97,188 square feet and is now used as a conference center with 97 guest rooms. According to google, the home is only about an hour from Danbury.

Coming in at the third largest house in America is the famous Oheka Castle. It's 109,000 square feet and one of the largest homes in New York State. The Oheka Castle is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Danbury.

Lastly, the second largest house in the entire country is the Fair Field Home located in Sagaponack, New York. The house is 110,000 square feet and was built in 2003. It was built by a junk bond billionaire, and according to the article, needed its own power plant because it was so large. It's about a 3 hour and 20 minute drive from Danbury.

If you ever have a day where you just want to go for a drive, I recommend going to drive by some of these places since they're not far away. I'm sure you will be completely stunned.

I stick to my point before, I can't imagine anyone cleaning or decorating a home that's thousands and thousands of square feet. But hey, if you have more money than you know what to do with, have at it. To see the full list of the largest homes in America, you can view it here.
