How Connecticut’s Pay Equity Bill Will Change Your Next Job Interview
Lawmakers gathered at the capitol behind the Governor in Hartford the other day as he signed into law something that will help “level the playing field,” as they say, regarding salary differentials for people working similar jobs.
The major move the state took to make this happen yesterday affects what questions employers can ask applicants regarding their work history, according to WTNH. In the past, questions regarding salary history would determine a new hire’s salary. They’re calling it pay equity. The problem is this, as Governor Malloy stated:
Women who are underpaid at their first job, will continue to be underpaid throughout their careers, creating a cycle of poverty. Women make significantly fewer dollars than their male counterparts.
Personally, I feel it will also prevent wage discrimination across the board. It will be in effect as of January 1st 2019. California, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Oregon have already enacted this legislation.
