Engine Company 23 of the Danbury Fire Department didn't have to travel far when they sprung into action last evening (March 8) to take care of a fire that broke out right across the street from them.

According to a post on the Danbury Fire Dept.'s Facebook page, a local passerby walked into Company 23 on Osbourne street and reported that smoke was billowing out of the building that formerly held J&R Germantown Deli, which is pretty much directly across the street on Germantown Rd.

After the report from the civilain, Firefighters say they alerted dispatch and made their way over to the building, where Lt. Zaniewski saw what he reported as a working fire with heavy black smoke.

After Deputy Chief Meehan quickly set up a command post, firefighters assisted seven people from the second floor out of the building, where they were evaluated by EMS. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The DFD says they put out a small fire that was located in the kitchen. The Danbury Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
