Well, that snuck up on us! "Wasn't it just Thanksgiving?" he asked in his best suburban pod-man voice.

Memorial Day is already upon us—this year falling on Monday, May 26, 2025—and for Costco, that means the lights will be going out at all U.S. locations, including the ones right here in the Nutmeg State. The company is closing its doors in observance of Memorial Day, and these Connecticut Costco stores will be shuttered for the entire day:

  • Brookfield

  • East Lyme

  • Enfield

  • Milford

  • New Britain

  • Norwalk

  • South Windsor

  • Waterbury

Shoutout to Costco for choosing to honor the holiday in a meaningful way. Nobody needs to be wandering the aisles searching for a 40-pound bucket of mustard when we should all be marinating in a glorious mix of hot dogs and booze juices with friends and family.

Costco doesn’t just shut down for Memorial Day—they take a stand for family time and national reflection on several major holidays. According to their website, Costco is also closed on:

  • New Year’s Day

  • Easter Sunday

  • Memorial Day

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas Day

Now, if you're one of those people who insists on shopping during a celebration of American bravery and sacrifice, you still have options—though we’re not saying it’s the right move. These retailers will remain open on Memorial Day (even though it's clearly the wrong thing to do):

  • Walmart: Regular hours (typically 6 a.m. – 11 p.m.)

  • Sam’s Club: Plus, members: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Club members: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

  • Trader Joe’s: Regular hours

  • Target: Regular hours (call your local store to confirm)

  • Publix: Regular hours (pharmacy closed)

  • Whole Foods: Regular hours

Maybe one day, these companies will put American families before their bottom line. Until then, cheers to Costco for doing it right.

4 Connecticut Based Department Stores That Are No More

I certainly remember shopping at three of the stores on this list and it transports me back to my youth and that makes it a find memory. These 4 stores were not only wildly popular in their day but they had their national headquarters right here in the Nutmeg State.
