Here's a diagnosis that will strike fear into the heart of any homeowner: You Need a New Roof. Roof replacement is one of the most expensive things that can happen multiple times to your home, with an average cost of $10,000-30,000 each time. Believe it or not, Connecticut has had multiple instances of scammers posing as roofers in recent years.

According to the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and the Better Business Bureau over 500+ roofing-related complaints have been received over the past two years (2023-24), and with 70+ degree weather here for the next few months the CT DCP and BBB have sent out a Consumer Alert to build awareness to scammers posing as low-budget roofers.

Before You Sign a Contract, Here's What You Should Do

According to Connecticut DCP Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli, Connecticut residents should be especially aware of roofing scams after violent storms have passed through the state, and throughout our warm weather months in general. Before you hire, Cafferelli suggests:

  • Do your research on the roofing company
  • Verify their info is legitimate
  • Use Your Insurance Company for Inspections
  • Scammers often suggest that they can pad your deductible - Don't. You may lose your coverage in addition to your cash
  • Read through the company's online reviews, the truth is out there
  • Request a roof shingle warranty
  • Request a written contract that includes: The roofing company's registration number, timeline, total cost, and a disclosure of the customer's three-day window of the right to cancel the contract.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you do encounter a scammer send an e-mail to dcp.complaints@ct.gov.
