Since I have enough anxiety to take down a small horse, I get why this might be stressing you out. Let me help calm that vein popping out of your forehead.

But seriously, this deadline isn't as dramatic as it seems. The only time you need to worry is if you’ve got a flight coming up and no valid passport. Otherwise, take a deep breath and tackle this when you’ve got the time.

Here’s everything you need to know:

How do I Know if I Have a Real ID?

How Can I Tell If I Already Have a REAL ID?
Look for a gold star on the front of your license or ID. If you see it, you’re good—no further action needed. Look at the graphic below. That is what it should look like.

What Do I Need a REAL ID For?
Boarding domestic flights (starting May 7, 2025). Entering certain federal buildings (military bases, nuclear sites, etc.). It’s part of a federal law passed for security reasons after 9/11. Yeah, I have mine so now I guess I can visit a nuclear site? Get real.

What Other IDs Can I Use Instead?
If you don’t want a REAL ID, you can use a valid U.S. passport or passport card, Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST cards, U.S. military ID, or permanent resident card. I'm going out of the country late this summer and I may not come back. That is not because I don't love my country, it's the best. I'm just tired of having to jump through bureaucratic hoops to be "compliant." I DON'T WANT TO COMPLY WITH ANYTHING!

Am I Eligible for a REAL ID?
You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Drive-only license holders are not eligible.

What Do I Need to Get a REAL ID?
Bring proof of identity (e.g. U.S. passport or birth certificate), two pieces of mail showing your CT address (from different senders, dated within 90 days), your Social Security card (optional, but accepted), and any legal name change docs if your name differs from your ID. Because I have mine already, I want to go to the DMV with an old Polaroid and say, "this is me, give me my Real ID."

What Are the Steps to Get One?
Check your eligibility. Gather the required documents using the REAL ID checklist. Book an in-person appointment at DMV or DMV Express. Pay the fee if not renewing ($30 duplicate fee). Receive your REAL ID in the mail within 20 business days. Track delivery online.

What Does It Cost?
If you’re renewing, there’s no extra cost. If not renewing yet, a $30 duplicate fee applies. The following are the fees for licenses and IDs: 6-year license: $72, 8-year license: $96, ID card (6 years): $24, ID card (8 years): $32, Age 65+ renewal (2 years): $24.

What If I Don't Want One?
You can renew your license without getting a REAL ID. Your license will still let you legally drive, but it won’t be accepted for flights or federal facility access after May 7, 2025.

What Else Should I Know?
You don’t need a REAL ID if you don’t fly or visit federal buildings. DMV has offered REAL ID verification since 2011. Social Security documentation is no longer required but can still be used. Verification is available at DMV offices, DMV Express, AAA, and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union. Non-U.S. citizens must visit a DMV office and show proof of permanent residency.

What Would a Connecticut Survival Pack Include?

Connecticut should come with a user's manual and possibly a survival pack. What would you need in that pack? I've been thinking about it, let's see if you agree.

This is One of the Oddest-Looking Creatures in Connecticut

Connecticut may not be famous for its rare or unusual wildlife. In fact, many of the animals we share the Nutmeg State with can be found across other parts of the country and the world. While we may not be the top destination for wildlife enthusiasts, we still have some pretty fascinating s---. One particularly oddball resident of Connecticut is the Star-Nosed Mole. Dig these knuckleheads.
