When people think about places that might show up on a nuclear war target map, Connecticut probably isn’t the first state that comes to mind.

But believe it or not, one Connecticut location occasionally appears in military discussions about strategic targets. The town is Groton, and the reason is simple: submarines.

Why One Connecticut Town Shows Up on Nuclear War Target Maps

Groton is home to Naval Submarine Base New London, the primary East Coast base for the U.S. Navy’s submarine fleet. Because of its importance to the Navy, the area is widely known as the “Submarine Capital of the World.”

Just down the road is another major piece of the puzzle: Electric Boat, the shipyard where many of America’s nuclear-powered submarines are built.

These submarines play a key role in the U.S. nuclear deterrence strategy. Some are capable of launching ballistic missiles and are designed to remain hidden underwater for long periods.

There Are Currently No Credible Warnings or Threats Involving Connecticut

Because of that strategic role, analysts who study global military scenarios sometimes include submarine bases like Groton on hypothetical nuclear target maps.

But before anyone starts digging backyard fallout shelters, experts say there’s an important thing to understand. These maps are not predictions. They are academic or military exercises meant to study how global conflict might unfold.

So while Groton’s submarine base makes Connecticut strategically important in military terms, there’s no indication the state faces any unique danger.

Still, it’s pretty wild to realize that a quiet Connecticut shoreline town plays such a big role in the nation’s defense.
