You know you’ve considered, debated, or at least joked about moving to the dirty swamp known as Florida. I tease anyone who mentions this to me, not because I’m mean, but because I know what’s waiting for them down there. How do I know? Because I did it.

Without boring you with all the issues I ran into, I can sum it up in one word — regret. And it only took me about two weeks of living there to figure that out.

But Florida isn’t the only place on the map. While I’m a red, white, and blue patriot, I’ve also always had an adventurous streak. The idea of living in another country has always appealed to me. The real question is: where?

I’m not packing my bags anytime soon, but I did some research for fun and came up with five affordable countries worth considering. I pulled info from a mix of sources, including Forbes, MSN, and ExpatSi. So here are five countries you might want to bring up at your next family meeting.

If you live in Connecticut, chances are you’ve thought about moving — probably more than once. Warm weather, beaches, and palm trees all sound great, until you remember Florida also comes with dinosaurs in the canals and bugs the size of volleyballs. I lived there for a bit, and let’s just say the honeymoon phase ended fast.

Instead of packing up and hauling down to America’s filthiest swamp, maybe consider these foreign lands instead. I’ve identified five affordable and beautiful countries where your dollar can really go far.

I was recently in the Dominican Republic for 10 days with my wife, celebrating her 40th birthday (gross, I know). We had a blast. Her family’s originally from there, so we really got around. Sure, we spent a few days at a beautiful resort in Punta Cana like proper tourists, but that was just the start. For the rest of the trip, we crisscrossed the country for the second time in 10 years.

Whenever I wasn’t busy being floored by the beauty of the place, I was daydreaming out loud about how we could move there, how we could make it work.

It’s officially on my dream board to revisit in another decade. JK — I don’t have a dream board. Seems pointless when my brain is already 90% daydreams.
