According to MSN, Connecticut has officially landed among the most expensive states to live in across the entire country, which honestly feels less like “news” and more like confirmation of something every Nutmeg State resident screams every time they open an electric bill.

The report looked at overall cost-of-living data across the U.S., measuring things like housing, groceries, healthcare, transportation, utilities, and other everyday expenses. Connecticut made the list largely because of sky-high housing prices, brutal utility costs, and property taxes that sometimes feel like a punishment for successfully owning a home.

And if you live anywhere near Fairfield County, you definitely don’t need a study to explain this to you. At this point, buying eggs, filling up your gas tank, and paying Eversource in the same week basically qualifies as extreme sports.

Here’s how the Top 10 shook out:

10. Connecticut
9. Maine
8. New Jersey
7. Maryland
6. New York
5. Alaska
4. Washington, D.C.
3. California
2. Massachusetts
1. Hawaii

One of the biggest factors hurting Connecticut residents is utility costs. The state reportedly has some of the highest energy expenses in the nation thanks to aging infrastructure and heavy reliance on natural gas. Housing prices also continue to climb, especially in towns popular with New York commuters.

What’s interesting is that most of the states on the list are clustered either in the Northeast or out west, while much of the South and Midwest remain significantly more affordable.

Of course, Connecticut residents already knew this without needing economists to crunch numbers. The second you spend $14 on a turkey sandwich, pay $300 to heat your house for a week, and then get emotionally assaulted by your property tax bill, you realize living in Connecticut is basically a luxury subscription service nobody remembers signing up for.

The Forgotten Connecticut Inventions That Changed America

Connecticut has invented a lot more than submarines and insurance paperwork. The everyday stuff — the things you eat, toss, crank, or stash in a drawer — often traces right back to the Nutmeg State. Here’s a look at some fun, surprising, and downright essential items that were born in Connecticut.
