As a recreational vehicle (RV) owner, you know there's no better time to hit the open road than the summer. The kids are off from school, the weather is beautiful, and the scenery always seems to be a little more beautiful than it usually is for some reason.

However, before you and your family begin your exciting next road trip, there are a few relatively basic RV maintenance tasks you should make sure you've completed so that you can have peace of mind that your adventure will be a safe and successful one.

With the help of our friends from Levine Auto & Truck Parts, we've compiled this list of 5 basic RV maintenance tips you need to know ahead of your next road trip:

1. Check the fluids

Like any vehicle, it's important to make sure your RV's fluid levels are at healthy levels. Check inside the engine compartment and look to see if the power steering, transmission, engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid may need refilling.

2. Start the engine

You won't be hitting the road quite yet, but you will want to start your RV's engine to see if the dashboard lights, headlights, taillights, and windshield wipers are working properly.

3. Check the tires

It's pretty common for RV tires to lose air pressure if they've been in storage for a while, so use a tire pressure gauge to measure the pounds per square inch (PSI) of each wheel. If you don't already have a pressure gauge, Levine Auto & Truck Parts has a wide selection of high quality products to choose from.

4. Check your batteries

A dead battery is any RV owner's worst nightmare. The best way to avoid having one is by keeping your battery fully charged at all times and replacing it every 3-5 years, which is the average lifespan of most batteries.

5. Check your brakes

For the safety of you and your passengers, it's always crucial to ensure that your brakes are in great condition. Keep the wheel bearings lubricated and inspect the brakes themselves to make sure they have enough material on them and are working properly.
