I was a Dispatcher for Watertown, CT Police/Fire/911 in the late 80's. It was my third job ever and I was not ready for the responsibilities. I lasted 6 months and I quit after I was mandated to work my third 16 hour day in a row.

I wasn't prepared to listen to someone as they took their last breath, or trying to calm someone down after they were assaulted, in order to get a description of the suspect. I didn't think it was going to be an easy job, but I was so unprepared for the huge responsibility that came with it. Ultimately, I walked away with mad respect for what law enforcement employees have to go through 24/7/365 - the worst of the worst.

If you've ever wanted to experience what Police Officers, Investigators, Detectives, and all other police department employees experience on a regular basis, and you live in Waterbury like I do, your chance is coming up soon.

The Waterbury Police Department has just announced their Fall Citizen's Police Academy for 2021. It's a 6 week program that offers information and instructions, providing the public with knowledge and understanding of the Police Department's personnel, policies, and practices. The 6 week program covers most departments of the WPD, with officers conducting each of the multiple sessions.

Some of the topics that will be covered are Patrol Procedures, Criminal & Drug Investigation, the Criminal Justice System, Specialized Units, Crime Prevention, Firearm Safety, a Ride Along Program, Traffic Procedure/DUI Enforcement, SWAT Team Presentation, Forensics, and a tour of the WPD Headquarters.

Applicants must be 18 years or older, reside or own a business in Waterbury, be of good moral character and never been convicted of a felony or class A or B misdemeanor.

If you've watched Live PD, Cops, First 48, or any of the CSI's, and would like to personally experience what these brave men and women go through, contact Officer Matt Lemos of the Waterbury Police Department at 203-574-6962.
