Washington’s New Speed Cameras Might Take a Beating This Summer
I drove past one of Washington, Connecticut's new speed cameras this morning for the first time ever, and I think they're going to have a very busy Summer.

Washington Depot is in a very quiet piece of Connecticut, and it's a small town with only 3,600+ residents, and there are only a few major roadways to get into and out of the area. Wow, did that change this week. Washington was the first in Connecticut to install multiple speed cameras across town, and over $21,000 in fines have been issued in their first month of operation. This is all before the Summerlong closure of Rt. 202, but that has just started this week. From what I can tell from today's ride in, the cameras are going to get a workout in the coming weeks.
Rt. 109 is the suggested bypass for those inconvenienced by the summerlong closure of Rt. 202 in Bantam/Morris/Washington. The 202 closure statrted this past Monday, June 16, and will last at least until 8/31/25. There is no easy alternate route around this temporary closure of a main artery, it's a multi-month, multi-million dollar bridge replacement. The other factor that may contribute to the higher amount of volume on 109 this week is that Rt. 109 is being resurfaced and paved right now also. The crews started that major project this past Monday also, near the intersection of 109 and 202 in New Milford.
This morning at 4AM I had 109 in Washington almost to myself, and as I crept up past the speed camera, someone doing way more than 25MPH flew up behind me. Shooting fish in a barrel? Maybe not at 4AM, but 9-5? These cameras should rack them up until August and beyond.
