I-95 Exclusive: Warren Haynes is ‘Deeply Humbled’ By Fan Love
Warren Haynes is a man with a full schedule. While he’s gearing up for live shows to celebrate 30 years of Gov't Mule, his current focus is on his new solo music. Warren Haynes will release his first solo album in nine years, titled Million Voices Whisper, on November 1st.
Additionally, he’ll be performing a major show at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, on October 11th. We recently had the chance to speak with Haynes about his new music, upcoming tour, and his legacy. Here are some highlights from our conversation on September 18th, 2024.
Lou: We know you have the new solo album coming out "Million Voices Whisper," it becomes available November 1st. We listened to the first single "This is Life as We Know It" this morning and I've got to tell you, it kicks the ever-loving s-- out of everything else being played everywhere right now.
Warren: "Haha, well, thank you!"
Lou: "Is the rest of the album going to be very familiar to fans, a little bit of a departure? Explain what you did here with this project.
Warren: "It's somewhat similar to my solo record Man in Motion which was centered around soul music which was my first love. This record in some ways is similar to that but in other ways it's very different. It has a lot of different influences but I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It's been over nine years since I released a solo record."
Lou: Derek Trucks joined you in the studio to cut a song for the album called "Real, Real Love" can you tell us about that track?
Warren: "Well that song was started by Greg Allman, he had started writing it before he passed away and he showed it to me but it never got finished so I finished it after he passed and I thought of Derek, that we should go in the studio together and record it. Derek and I wound up writing, I think four or five other songs over a three-day period that we spent together down at his place. We recorded two of those songs as well, so he's on three songs on the new record and it was the first time that we had been in the studio together since the Allman Brothers stopped playing. It was just a great reunion, we had a great time and of course the end results were fantastic, I'm very pleased with the way it turned out."
Lou: The Allman Brothers music is special, Gov't Mule music, special and it's worldwide. You don't know us but your music is a part of our life. My father would wake me up on Saturday mornings by blasting Mountain Jam so I'd get out of bed and go mow the lawn. With millions of people around the world loving and appreciating your work, are you able to ever sit back and try and quantify and wrap your head around the impact that you've had on people you don't even know?
Warren: "Well, I don't think of it that way but I do have the opportunity to travel a lot and meet people and when people tell you that your music has impacted their life, our music in specific, it's an amazing feeling. It always brings me back to why I started playing, singing and writing songs in the first place because I was that kind of fan. I was that kind of music fan, I think all musicians start out as being super fans. That is what leads us to that next step of wanting to learn how to play, sing, and write songs. So, I can relate to that, through the years I've met a lot of people and even worked with a lot of people that I grew up listening to and you want to tell them, hey your music changed my life. So if somebody says that to me then I'm deeply humbled by it."
