A Hudson Valley man lost his life after he was hit by two vehicles while trying to cross a busy highway in New Jersey.

On Saturday around 9 p.m., 36-year-old Ryan O'Keefe of Wappinger Falls attempted to cross Route 4 in Paramus when he was hit in the center lane of the highway by a Subaru and then run over by a Chrysler, police say.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, O'Keefe was later pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center.

O'Keefe was born in Poughkeepsie in April 1983 and he graduated from John Jay East Fishkill in 2001, according to his obituary.

"He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who enjoyed riding his motorcycle or bicycle in addition to other outdoor sports. He valued the importance of physical fitness and was also an avid reader. Ryan loved life and will be remembered for his spirit of compassion. More than anything else, he cherished his family," his obituary reads.

No charges were filed against either driver, though the crash is still under investigation, NJ.Com reports.

Calling hours and a funeral are scheduled for Wednesday at the McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction.
