Tragic news to report, as a very bright international student has reportedly died by suicide in Connecticut.

Tianyin Shang, a sophomore from Shanghai, China, was found submerged in UConn's well-known on-campus lake on Monday by Storrs police and was immediately rushed to the nearby Windham Hospital. Upon arrival, the young woman was in critical condition, but unfortunately passed away later that afternoon.

It was just yesterday (Jan. 22) that Health officials confirmed that Tianyin Shang's death has been ruled a suicide by drowning, the Daily Campus reports.

According to an email that was disseminated Tuesday from Eleanor Daughterty, the Dean of Students at UConn, Shang's loved ones knew her to be a smart student who was great at math, talented as an equestrian, and passionate about her Chinese background.

Daughterty's message to the student body was mournful and respectful to Shang's life and loved ones: "She is deeply missed, and many are struggling to understand her death." Daughterty also stated that UConn will be in touch with Shang's family throughout this grieving process.

Thomas Katsouleas, the President of UConn, also released an email in which he offers his personal condolences to Tianyin's loved ones. The president also foreshadowed a plan to better support the student body's health in the future. "Over the course of this semester, I will gather leaders and professionals to discuss what more we as a community can do to support the health and well being of our students across all campuses, both proactively and responsively. More on this soon," Katsouleas said.
