TSA: Connecticut Man Tried to Bring Loaded Gun on Plane at Westchester County Airport
There are always a lot of things on your mind as you're about to travel by air. We've heard about the many disruptions over the past couple of years involving unruly and out of control passengers. Having a flight either being delayed or diverted over someone's poor choices can really suck. In this particular case, the passenger in question didn't even make it on to the flight to begin with. It was what he was allegedly carrying that alerted officials.
The Hour reports that a man from Fairfield was traveling out of Westchester County Airport when he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officials Tuesday. As the man placed his items through the airport's X-ray machine, an official noticed a 40-caliber handgun on the monitor. Once reported, the Westchester County Sherriff's Office responded, and placed the suspect under arrest after being detained,
While not too many details are available at this time on the suspect or the situation, the federal security director for Westchester County Airport reminded the public in a statement:
I can assure you that the civil penalty will be costly. If you own a firearm, pack it correctly for transport in checked baggage or leave it at home.
What Can You Carry on Flight?
In this case, the handgun was loaded with 10 bullets, says TSA, So, can you bring a gun on a flight at all? Officials say that guns can be brought on planes only if they're unloaded and packed in a locked case. The gun, additional parts, and any ammunition with it must also be declared to the flight during the check-in process.
The Connecticut man will also face a federal financial civil penalty for bringing a gun to an airport security checkpoint.
