Ticks Spotted In Connecticut Can Cause Severe Meat Allergy
Wow, did you know a certain tick can cause this severe allergy?
To live in Connecticut is to be very aware of the history of Lyme disease and it's relationship to our state. I can't think of many of us that don't regularly check ourselves for those nasty blood suckers. However, most people don’t worry about a tick making them allergic to meat.
Surprise, one type of tick can actually cause just that reaction.
In a story from cbsnews.com just one bite from what's known as the Lone Star tick, can cause a severe allergy to meat. While it's mostly found in the Southeast, it has been spotted elsewhere in the country including New England.
According to cbsnews.com the Lone Star tick bites can set off an immune response to alpha gal, which is a sugar found in beef, lamb, venison and pork. Reactions can include redness and itching, stomach problems, and in some cases, anaphylaxis -- a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
Just another thing to think about when you spend time outdoors. And in case you don't feel like you are well enough prepared, the website for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list of tips to avoid ticks and tick-borne illnesses.
It's a jungle out there people, better safe than sorry.
