This Illegal Ice Cream May Soon Be Legal in New York State
Here’s a piece of legislation we all can get behind. It’s not controversial, it’s delicious, refreshing, and represents the talents of all of New York State’s farmers, brewers, wine, and cider makers. The New York State Senate passed a bill in recent weeks, introduced by Senator Seward that could make beer, wine and hard cider ice cream legal according to the Democrat & Chronicle.
The manufacture and sale of these products is currently not legal, but the bill is making it’s way through the proper channels, and reads as follows:
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, the public health law and the alcoholic beverage control law, in relation to ice cream or other frozen desserts made with wine, beer or cider
These frozen desserts could only contain 5 percent alcohol by volume, and would be age restricted for persons 21 and older. Consumers would need identification to buy it, and it would come with warnings similar to those on wine, beer and other alcoholic products.
It looks like the bill should make it to Governor Andrew Cuomo for a signature soon. It’s got my vote!
