Tarrywile Park’s Hearthstone Castle – Refurbish or Demolish?

Built in 1897, Hearthstone Castle in Tarrywile Park is in such disrepair, that it's been closed to the public.

Even though Wikipedia says that Hearthstone Castle has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987, the mansion is in such shambles that the City of Danbury would need to come up with an outrageous amount of money to refurbish the structure to its original state according to an article in the NewsTimes. On the table, is a $20 million improvement project to improve sidewalks, roads, parks, and the city pound. It would certainly be a shame to demolish a National Landmark but at what cost to Danbury?

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, during an interview on the Ethan and Lou Show, announced that the city has proposed spending $1.6 million to tear down the mansion's walls and build a garden on the foundation. He also told Lou and I that the cost of completely refurbishing the castle could cost upwards of $25 million. Mayor Mark can be heard weekly on the I-95 Morning Show every Thursday at 8:45 AM.

Last summer, according to the NewsTimes, a fire started in the garbage around the mansion, and firefighters weren't allowed to enter because it wasn't safe. The fire department had to send up a drone to make sure the fire was put out correctly. Before any gardens can be fashioned, the Department of Environmental Protection will be sent into the site to clean up all the nasty stuff that has been festering for the last 20 years.
