Study Lists CT Among States Where People Spend Least on Groceries
A recent study shows that even with the shocking rise in the price of eggs, we're still better off in the overall price of our groceries here in Connecticut than most of the US.
Can you get out of a mid-week stop at your local grocery store for less than $100? My weekend stock-up trips have been up near $200 for the past two years. Our New Years shopping trip to Stew Leonard's? $260. Has your employer given you an increase in your pay to offset the price of eggs? Uh, no.

WalletHub.com has just released States Where People Spend the Most & Least on Groceries, and according to their study, Connecticut has ranked at #46, among the least. As for their methodology, WalletHub.com analyzed the price of 26 common grocery items, including meats, veggies, frozen foods, fruits, and cleaning products across the 50 states. They then summed up the cost of the products and adjusted the figure to the median month income from each state.
WalletHub's rankings are interesting, they found that people in Mississippi spend the most on groceries in the country, with groceries accounting for 2.6% of their median household income. Although Mississippi has some of the lowest grocery prices in the US, Mississippi also has the lowest median household income in the US. Based on that methodology, Connecticut is in much better shape.
Connecticut's cost of groceries as a share of median monthly household income is 1.62% according to WalletHub, ranking us at #46. The four states that ranked better were New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, and New Jersey.
