Southeast Traffic Stop Takes Unexpected Turn, Police Say
According to the Office of the Putnam County Sheriff, a routine traffic stop in Southeast this week turned into a drug arrest after deputies discovered fentanyl inside a vehicle coming off I-84.

Sheriff Brian Hess says deputies from the Sheriff’s Office Conditions Unit pulled over a gray Honda Accord around 5:00 p.m. on January 2 after spotting an expired inspection sticker on the Interstate 84 westbound on-ramp from Route 312. Nothing dramatic to start — just the kind of stop that happens every day.
During the course of the stop, deputies say they determined that the driver, 36-year-old Jake F. Colyard of East Fishkill, was in possession of a white powdery substance. That substance was reportedly identified as fentanyl, at which point the traffic stop quickly escalated into an arrest.

Police say Colyard was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, which is classified as a Class A misdemeanor under New York State law. In addition, according to authorities, he was reportedly issued a traffic ticket for operating a motor vehicle with an expired inspection sticker.
According to police, Colyard was released with an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Southeast Town Court at a later date. Authorities note that the charges are allegations at this stage, and the case will proceed through the court system as scheduled. Police have not released additional details regarding the investigation at this time.
