It's hard to imagine that Connecticut constructed 12 Nike Missile sites from 1956 to 1971. According to Hearst CT Media, Project Nike—named after the Greek goddess of victory—was established to protect the United States from the Soviet Union during the Cold War. By 1958, the Army had constructed 200 Nike missile bases throughout the United States.
According to nikemissile.org, Project Nike was one of many strategies initiated by the United States to defend against a nuclear attack. In 1953, the Nike Missile bases, part of a defense chain involving sea and land aircraft, were armed with Nike Ajax missiles. These missiles were developed to intercept enemy aircraft and could only be equipped with conventional explosives.
