Police: Newtown Man Arrested Across the Street After Bank Robbery
A Newtown man has been arrested after allegedly robbing a bank on Queen Street today (August 24).
According to a press release, the Newtown Police Department received back-to-back phone calls from both Bank of America security and a 911 caller that a robbery had just happened at the Bank of America branch at about 2:38 PM. The report says that the robber handed a note to a teller that said he had a gun and would kill everyone inside the bank if the police were notified. At that point, the suspect took some money and fled on foot.
The Newtown PD says that officers were immediately dispatched and based on the 911 caller's description, located 63-year-old, John McCarthy of Newtown behind the Newtown Color Center — a business just across the street from the bank that had been robbed.
John McCarthy was allegedly armed with a large butcher knife and found to be in possession of $833, the same amount that was stolen, according to an audit of the bank teller's tray.
McCarthy has been charged with robbery, threatening, and carrying a dangerous weapon. He was held on $100,000 and will be arraigned in Danbury tomorrow.
