Newtown Native Snapped Photo From Now-Famous Bernie Sanders Meme
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was hanging out waiting for the Inauguration to begin when photojournalist Brendan Smialowski captured the Senator wearing his big warm mittens.
Smialowski, who graduated from Newtown High School in the late '90s, didn't realize that his photo of Bernie would become a top photoshopped meme across the internet. Take a look at some of the hundreds of Bernie Sanders memes that have popped up on the internet.
Smialowski has made quite a name for himself in the photojournalism world according to a newstimes article. He's traveled with President George W. Bush, President Barack Obama and President Trump when he met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Even Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont couldn't help himself with posting a Bernie meme.
Smialowski, who works for the wire service Agence France-Presse, wasn't all that enthused about his photo becoming a meme, but appreciated that more people were able to see his work. While being interviewed by the Newstimes, he also said,
I try to make thoughtful and layered images. I try to shoot everything as a story. Honestly, I am one of those guys who is very lucky. I have a job that I not only enjoy but believe in.
While attending Newtown High, Smialowski did some work for the Newtown Bee and interned for the Newstimes. As a photojournalist, he lives with his family in D.C and has covered four presidents, a series of major disasters, and two wars.
