Old Tappan Zee Bridge Damage Causes Traffic Delays, Could Collapse
The Old Tappan Zee Bridge has sustained damage during its dismantling that could cause it to collapse.
Lohud reports that water traffic on the Hudson River has had delays, and at one point a complete stoppage of all water traffic, due to damage on the old Tappan Zee Bridge. A rusted piece of the bridge had become a safety concern.
The damage on the old Tappan Zee from the rusted piece also postponed the opening of the second half of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, which is formerly named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
Now, according to 1010 Wins, engineers fear the old Tappan Zee Bridge could collapse. Specifically, they fear it will collapse onto the new bridge right next to it. Fear of collapsing was why the new bridge was built in the first place.
Water traffic is still limited, with only daylight passing hours permitted in certain areas. Road traffic is still being routed by both directions passing on the Rockland County bound side of the bridge. There has been no announcement about when the new side of the bridge will open.
