A New Hotline Helps Track Stranded Sharks This Winter
Have you ever stumbled upon a shark that has washed ashore in Connecticut? It happens more often than you think, especially in Winter. Be prepared: A new hotline to report such a thing exists.

If a bear tries to get into your home, a moose wanders onto a highway, or a fox is acting strange in your yard: There is a wildlife expert, or first responder, in Connecticut waiting for your call. How about sharks? Here's a new one for those who find a shark washed ashore in Connecticut: NOAA Fisheries New England has just put out a request on their social media for residents of Connecticut and Rhode Island to use a new hotline to report sharks that have washed ashore.
If you find a shark on a beach in Connecticut or Rhode Island this Winter, NOAA has requested you do these:
- Take a few photos
- Call this number - 401-859-1043
- Give them this info: Date and time of sighting, Location, Species (If you can identify), Length, Dead or Alive?
Why are you taking the time to do this instead of just taking a selfie with a shark on a beach? Scientists from NOAA Science Center's Apex Predators Program will use your information to collect data and samples in order to better understand shark biology and ecology.
What are the most common sharks found here in New England? Smooth Dogfish, Sand Tiger, Porbeagle, Sandbar, and Blue, and don't forget about those Great Whites in the warm months.
