Opening up a business is a challenge even in "normal" times. Throw a pandemic into the mix and you've got an even more unique set of challenges. In spite of that, Newtown's NewSylum Brewing Company is finally opening to the public.

The brewery and taproom has been under construction for over a year as part of the ongoing renovations at the Fairfield Hills campus on Wasserman Way. The former psychiatric hospital is now home to the Newtown Youth Academy, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance, the town's Municipal Center and more.

While customers still can't get inside to check out the gorgeous renovations, the brewery has officially opened for outdoor seating on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2-8 PM. Seating is limited to 50 seats at any time and masks are required.

If there is a wait to be seated, they will take your number at a hostess station and call you when a table is available. During wait times, they are asking customers to limit their stay to 90 minutes. In the meantime, there are over 100 acres to walk on the Fairfield Hills property, and many buildings in various stages of renovation to check out while you wait. Some have been restored beautifully and some are still old and creepy.

The brewery has been selling their beer to go in cans and growlers off of their loading dock for the past several weeks. Their "Counting The Days" IPA has been particularly popular, with cans selling out online pretty much as soon as they are released. We know that the staff at NewSylum has indeed been counting the days for quite some time, and we wish them all the best and welcome the newest addition to Western CT's craft beer scene.
