A Newtown man has been arrested after police say he tried to grab an officer's pistol during a struggle late Friday night / early Saturday morning.

According to the Newtown Police Department, they were called to Cover Two Sports Cafe in Sandy Hook at around 2:15 AM on Saturday after 35-year-old Chris Deluca refused to leave the bar despite being asked to leave multiple times.

When Officer James and Sergeant Seabrook arrived, they reportedly asked Deluca to leave again, be allegedly told them that in order for him to leave, they would have to physically remove him.

From there, the officers say they began making a motion toward the unruly patron in an attempt to escort him out of the building, but that's when he allegedly became even more combative, swinging punches and striking the two cops.

A struggle ensued and while the officers brought Deluca to the ground to subdue him, he allegedly tried to remove one of the guns from one of their holsters, and needless to say, he was tazed and his face was sprayed.

Deluca was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer, criminal attempt to steal a firearm, criminal trespass, breach of peace and interfering with an officer of the law. He is is being held at Newtown Police Department on a $50,000 bond.

In a statement, Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde said, "It was extremely fortunate that Deluca was not able to get the officers gun, the officers were in no doubt in a fight for their lives as he wanted that gun. If it were not for the training and strength of the officers the situation could have easily had a totally different outcome"

Police also went on record to say that they do not believe alcohol played a role in this incident, and that the suspect was angry about another issue.
