Mosquitoes Found in 5 Connecticut Towns With West Nile Virus
The potentially dangerous West Nile Virus has been found in mosquitoes in 5 Connecticut towns, according to the CT Department of Public Health.
A survey done by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station found mosquitoes in Bridgeport, Easton, Stratford, New Canaan and Waterbury. According to a press release from the CAES, the survey was done between June 18 and July 10.
At this time, no humans have tested positive for the virus in 2018. 134 cases of West Nile have been identified in Connecticut since 2000. Three people have died from the virus in that time.
The ct.gov website has some helpful hints for reducing your risk of exposure to West Nile, including:
- Minimize time spent outdoors around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair.
- Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin.
- Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies when outdoors.
- Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to label instructions, when it is necessary to be outdoors.
