Look East, a Spectacular Meteor Shower Over Connecticut Tonight
Can't sleep lately? Tossing and turning between 10PM and 5AM? Do something cool instead of counting sheep tonight, insomniacs of Connecticut - Count meteors.
Did you see the sunrise this morning? It was stunning. We're finally going to be getting into a nice week of 70-degree temperatures in Connecticut, but the bigger event is happening millions of miles over our heads tonight. The peal of the 2025 Lyrid meteor shower is going to happen tonight, and the Northern hemisphere is in for quite a celestial treat.
According to cbsnews.com, the Lyrid meteor shower should be at its peak tonight (Monday, April 21) from just after 10PM Eastern time right through sunrise tomorrow (Tuesday, April 22) at 5AM. The best place and way to see these shooting stars is to lie on your back away from the bright street and house lights, or any light pollution, and watch the skies to the East of Connecticut. In past years, an average of 5 to 20 meteors will streak across your small view of the universe each hour.
According to wikipedia.com, each of those little shooting stars is a piece of dust that came off of a comet named C/1861 G1 Thatcher. Every year between April 15-30, Earth passes through this dusty trail, but some years have produced a better light show than most. Way back in 1803, the Lyrids produced up to 700 meteor sightings per hour, and the most recorded in the past years was the 2012 Lyrid shower, which produced 25-37 per hour.

This was the view looking East at 5:51AM today, it was beautiful.
