Police in Derby, Connecticut say a good Samaritan trying to break up an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend walking over a bridge ended up getting him thrown off the bridge over the Housatonic River.

The unnamed Samaritan's fall off the bridge was 45 feet downward, and it's a miracle he survived. The incident took place the morning of Thanksgiving day, of all days. The New York Post reports that all three people accused of the assault were arrested and charged by Shelton police.

25-year-old Gregory Rottjer of Derby, CT was charged with attempted murder for allegedly being the one who threw the victim over the bridge, and seriously injuring him. Through a series of cell phone footage, photos, and text message about a lost phone, police say they were able to piece together that the victim spotted Rottjer arguing with his girlfriend, 22-year-old Jennifer Hannum.

The victim reportedly intervened at first to ask if Hannum was OK before walking away. That's when police say the cell footage shows Rottjer became aggressive and began a fight with the victim. At that time Rottjer's friend, 27-year-old Matthew Dorso of Ansonia allegedly became involved, reportedly fighting with the victim's brother. Dorso has been charged with third-degree assault.

At some point during the fight, Rottjer allegedly grabbed the victim by the legs and lifted him up and over the bridge. When police arrived, they found the victim on his back in the freezing water below. He continues to recover from his injuries.

WFSB.com says that during the course of the investigation, Jennifer Hannum lied to the police and as a result, has been charged with interfering with an officer.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Gregory Rottjer has been charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Despite the injuries to the victim and the very serious legal troubles for those accused, let's hope their Christmas holiday is better than Thanksgiving was.
