According to an article in the Putnam Daily Voice, Ramapo Police stated that "Romance scams are not uncommon, and they are successful enough that it allows the scams to perpetuate."
So you don't get caught up in this ruse, here is how the scam works. The alleged victim was communicating with a woman through a dating app. The alleged scammer said she needed to borrow some money about a business matter.
The woman then told him that she would mail him a check to deposit in his bank account. He was then instructed to mail her a check for a lesser amount. Have you figured out what happened next?
If you guessed that her check bounced, you were 100% correct. The check he sent to the scammer was cashed immediately, and then she disappeared. Police always warn residents to stop and think before you send money to anyone you don't know.
Another scam beginning to materialize across the country revolves around the COVID-19 vaccine. The Redding CT Police Department issued a warning of potential scams and the signs to watch out for:
- Being asked to pay for the vaccine
- Never pay someone who asks for money to put your name on a vaccine waiting list
- Telemarketers offering to sell you the vaccine
- Watch out for ads about vaccines on social media, email, or phone messages
