
Connecticut Cities Shine In New STEM Job Rankings
STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, and STEM professionals are in high demand in 2026, and more importantly, the future. A recent study has just been released ranking the Best & Worst Metro Areas for STEM Professionals in 2026 and three cities in Connecticut have ranked among the best.

According to WalletHub.com's Best & Worst Metro Areas for STEM Professionals (2026), Boston is the #1 city in the US in 2026 because it prioritizes STEM advancement, has the second-most invention patents per capita, and STEM employment in Boston makes up 11% of all jobs. Worcester, Mass was not far behind ranking at #11, and coming in at #17 is Hartford, Connecticut.
Hartford Ranked as #17 Best Metro Area for Stem Professionals in 2026
Our Capital City did well in WalletHub's rankings, pointing out that the Hartford metro area ranks 8th nationally for professional STEM opportunities, 16th nationally in quality of life, and 27th nationally in STEM-friendliness. In order to arrive at their rankings WalletHub.com compared 100 of the most populated US metro areas across three key dimensions: Professional Opportunities, Stem Friendliness, and Quality of Life. That data was further evaluated using 21 relevant metrics - Average wage, share of workforce in STEM, STEM employment growth, Quality of Engineering schools, Tech meetups per capita, Housing affordability, and recreation friendliness.
Two other metropolitan areas in Connecticut made WalletHub's rankings, with New Haven at #51, and Bridgeport coming in at #87. Springfield, Massachusetts was ranked at #25, giving Massachusetts three cities in the Top 25. New York City was beat in the rankings by Albany, NYC ranked at #37, while Albany ranked at #26. Providence, Rhode Island was ranked at #30.
