Danbury Celebrated Jamaican Heritage and Community at Heritage Plaza

According to a release from the City of Danbury, local officials and community members gathered this past Saturday, Aug. 1, at Heritage Plaza to celebrate Jamaican Independence Day and recognize the lasting impact of the city's West Indies community.

Mayor Roberto Alves was joined by City Treasurer Dan Jowdy, members of Connecticut's state delegation, and residents for the ceremony, which honored Jamaica's independence while also celebrating the cultural diversity that continues to shape Danbury.

According to the city, Mayor Alves spoke about one of the unique freedoms Americans enjoy: the ability to proudly celebrate the heritage and independence of other nations while living in the United States. He reportedly noted that the American flag represents those freedoms, allowing people from all backgrounds to embrace and share their cultural traditions openly.
