New Details Released in Violent Stabbing at Carmel Post Office

According to a press release from the Carmel Police Department, authorities have released new details about the violent stabbing that happened last week inside the U.S. Post Office on Fair Street in Carmel.

According to police, 38-year-old Howard McNiff of Nanuet has been arrested and is facing several serious charges, including attempted second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree assault, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Authorities say the incident unfolded shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, after Putnam County 911 received reports of a disturbance at the post office. Police allege McNiff entered the building armed with a knife and repeatedly stabbed a 61-year-old postal employee from Carmel in the upper body. According to authorities, another postal worker suffered a cut to the arm while trying to intervene and stop the attack.

Police say a Putnam County Sheriff's deputy was the first law enforcement officer to arrive and found the suspect still pursuing the victim. According to authorities, the deputy used a Taser to subdue McNiff before taking him into custody without any additional injuries being reported.

The primary victim was reportedly taken by private vehicle to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for injuries that police say were not considered life-threatening. Authorities say he was released later that same day. The second employee reportedly declined medical treatment.

According to police, investigators believe the suspect and the victim knew each other, and they emphasized that this was an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public.

McNiff was arraigned in Carmel Town Court, where authorities say temporary orders of protection were issued. He was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility and remains in custody while the case moves through the court system.
