New Milford Police are reporting that one person has been killed when a truck rolled down an embankment and into the Housatonic River earlier today causing major traffic issues and closing potions of Kent Road (Rt 7).

Police say the accident, which involved a dump truck that reportedly wound up in the Housatonic River and another passenger vehicle, happened near the intersection of Kent Road and Cedar Hill Road shortly after 9:00 am Tuesday morning (June 11).

According to the New Milford Police Department, the truck was about 100 feet into the river when police arrived and were able to extricate at least one person from the vehicle.

Police say the deceased was driving a passenger car and was still stuck in the car with major injuries when they arrived. The driver of the dump truck was reportedly conscious and alert when he was taken to Danbury Hospital.

Details of what caused the crash are now under investigation and according to New Milford Police Facebook page, traffic was being detoured southbound on Route 7 from 55 to 39 and northbound on Route 7 from 37 to 39 to 55 during the day on Tuesday.

New Milford Mayor Pete Bass posted on Facebook that drivers are urged to stay away from the area, and that extended delays are expected.
