According to the Southington Police Department, on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 1:58 in the afternoon, Southington Police received a report of a single car motor vehicle accident in the area of 1244 Meriden Avenue in town, which is right in the vicinity of Craft Kitchen. Responding officers found that a GMC Sierra pickup truck had been traveling Northbound on Meriden Avenue, towards the center of Southington.

The operator of the GMC Sierra has been identified by Southington PD as James Dicaprio, (D.O.B. - 9-4-47). Dicaprio was found behind the wheel, and he also had a 6 month old Doberman puppy in the vehicle. Police have determined through their investigation that the Sierra left the roadway, drove across a lawn, struck a chain link fence, and finally ended up colliding with a Lavorgna Oil truck. Dicaprio was pronounced deceased at a local hospital, and the Doberman puppy appeared to not be harmed, and was later taken in by Southington Animal Control.

Anyone with information about this incident is being asked to contact Southington Police Officer Brian Lair, #245, at 860-261-0101, or you can email him at rlair@southingtonpolice.org.

Just awful, I hope that Mr. Dicaprio has relatives in the area that could, and want to take care of the puppy. It's sad to say, but I have thought about this worst-case scenario playing out in my own life, I'd want my little guy to go to a relative's home, if possible.
