Danbury Will Take Part in a Worldwide Celebration of Music Today
Make Music Day was founded in 1982 by Jack Lang and the staff at the Ministry of Culture.
The task at hand was getting the world to make beautiful sounds all at once. How could Planet Earth celebrate music in a way that is fully inclusive? The answer was simple, invite everyone to play music wherever they are and Make Music Day was born.
Education appears to be the event's biggest obstacle, especially here in the states. Most people probably don't know this event exists. This is not an issue in France, according to Make Music:
"The even takes place on the summer solstice, June 21, and is called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music”.)
The Fête has turned into a true national holiday: the country shuts down on the summer solstice and musicians take over. Almost 11% of French people (7 million people) have played an instrument or sung in public for the Fête de la Musique, and 64% of the country (43 million people) comes out each year to listen."
Make Music Day returns to Danbury today and organizers are encouraging you to grab a tambourine, a mic or a guitar and hit the streets, the front porch or your deck and perform. Aside from the personal pop-up performances Danbury has many acts scheduled to play today including:
