According to a release from the City of Danbury, local officials are reminding residents that there's a much safer place to buy and sell items from Facebook Marketplace than a random parking lot.

The reminder comes after the Danbury Police Department began investigating an armed robbery connected to what was supposed to be a routine Facebook Marketplace meetup. According to police, the incident serves as an important reminder that online transactions can quickly become dangerous when you're meeting a stranger.

To help reduce that risk, the City of Danbury is encouraging residents to use the Danbury Police Department as a designated meeting spot for legitimate online sales and property exchanges. The police station is monitored by security cameras, and officers are typically nearby, making it a much safer option than meeting at a secluded location or inviting someone to your home.

It's a tip you'll hear from police departments across the country. Many agencies recommend arranging transactions at a police station or another busy, well-lit public location with surveillance cameras. They also advise bringing a friend whenever possible, letting someone know where you're going, inspecting an item before handing over payment, and walking away if something feels off. If a buyer or seller insists on changing the meeting place or pressures you to move somewhere more private, that's a major red flag.

If you're buying or selling in Danbury, taking a few extra precautions—especially meeting at the police station—could make all the difference. Don't forget Nate Bargatze said it best...

It's one of those situations where it's always better to be safe than sorry.
