Christmas travel plans for some Connecticut residents may be hindered for the time being, as as a busy section of Interstate 84 is currently closed due to a serious car crash.

According to the Connecticut State Police, both the left and right lanes of I-84 westbound are closed to traffic as the result of a motor vehicle incident that reportedly occurred right around 11:00 AM on Saturday morning (December 25).

First responders say that upon arrival, CT state troopers observed an overturned vehicle between exits 16 and 17 in Southbury, and while no further details have been made available as of this writing, serious injuries to the occupants of the vehicles involved have been reported.

Travelers are currently reportedly able to pass the crash via an emergency lane on the shoulder of I-84, but drivers are urged to find alternate routes accordingly.

Accident reconstruction officials from the Connecticut Department of Transportation are on the scene, looking to determine the cause and severity of the crash.

The closing of I-84 comes just hours after state police report that between 12:00 AM on December 24 and 8:00 AM on December 25, troopers have responded throughout the state to 1,452 calls of service, 24 speeding violations, 4 DUI arrests, 178 accidents, and 16 crashes with reported injuries.

This is a developing story and we'll continue to keep this post updated as more information rolls in.
