Connecticut Woman Charged with DUI After Driving the Wrong Way
A Naugatuck woman was arrested Saturday night after allegedly driving the wrong way on Route 9 in Old Saybrook. According to police, Patricia Shanahan, 58, was spotted by a trooper traveling north in the southbound lanes around 10:36 PM.

After pulling over to the left lane, Shanahan reportedly didn’t realize she was driving in the wrong direction. When instructed to pull over to the shoulder, she allegedly ignored the order and continued driving slowly while straddling the right lane and shoulder.
Police say Shanahan eventually stopped after being boxed in by officers. During their interaction, the trooper noted signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol. Shanahan reportedly agreed to perform field sobriety tests but did not pass. She was arrested and taken to Troop F, where she was charged with:
- CGS 14-223(a): Disobeying Signal of an Officer
- CGS 14-227a: Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs
- CGS 14-237: Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway
Shanahan was released on a $2,500 bond and is due in Middletown Superior Court on January 21.
Wrong-way driving seems to be a relatively new phenomenon. We've read a lot about this happening in the last twenty years. When you ask why? People point to drugs and alcohol but if my memory serves me, we had those things for quite a while. Booze didn't debut in 2004.
