Connecticut: Where You Have to Adjust the Thermostat Every Day
What the hell was that Connecticut? In just the past 24 hours our weather went from 28 degrees to 67 degrees, to the craziest thunderstorms in a long time. Welcome to April?
The Pride of Hartford, Connecticut Mark Twain once said, "If you don't like the weather in New England, wait a few minutes". Man, ol' Samuel sure had it right. I've been battling the thermostat in my place for the past three weeks. Just when I think it's safe to turn the damn thing off for the season, we have another 25-degree night creep up on us.

The weather in Connecticut is fairly predictable, we have the wildcard of the Atlantic Ocean and its Tropical Depressions, Hurricanes, and high tides to our South and East, and the fairly tranquil Tri-State area to our West. Our Northerly neighbors bear the brunt of the heaviest snowstorms, but for some reason this year the big snow missed us to the South.
My gauge for the Spring flowers and the return of 65–70-degree days has usually been St. Patrick's Day, March 17. It's April 1 today, and the winds are cranking 45-degree temps with 25 MPH gusts following a stormy, 65-degree night.
I started thinking about it this morning, and the biggest shock in temperature drop and weather that I can remember happening in Connecticut was the Halloween Nor'easter of 2011. On October 29, 2011 we went to sleep at 50 degrees under cloudy skies, 24 hours later we had 8-10 inches of snow, and the temperature had dropped to 11 degrees. Come on 70 degree days of 2025, our electric bills need a break.
