Late Tuesday night (March 31), troopers were already dealing with a deadly crash on Route 15 north in Stamford. As part of their investigation, they did what they always do in these situations—set up a clear road closure with cruisers, flashing lights, and flares to guide drivers safely off the highway before reaching the scene.

And somehow, even with all of that in place, things still went sideways.

Police say a driver came flying through the closure area at a high rate of speed, completely blowing past the warning setup. That vehicle slammed directly into a state police cruiser, which instantly went up in flames. Let that sink in for a second—lights flashing, flares burning, multiple warnings—and it still wasn’t enough.

The only reason this didn’t turn into an even bigger tragedy is because the trooper assigned to that cruiser wasn’t inside at the time. In fact, after witnessing the crash, that same trooper ran toward the wreck to help the driver, who thankfully only suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It’s one of those stories that feels almost unbelievable until you realize how common distracted driving has become. Whether it’s texting, scrolling, messing with GPS, or just zoning out, it only takes a second for something like this to happen.

And this is exactly what state police are trying to hammer home right now—pay attention. Not kind of, not most of the time… all of the time. Because as this crash shows, even when hazards are as obvious as they can possibly be, it still might not be enough if your eyes and your brain aren’t locked in on the road.

Put the phone down. Whatever it is can wait.
