Connecticut’s Most Dangerous Animal Might Surprise You

According to World Population Review, every state has at least one animal that stands out as its most dangerous. Some of the picks are exactly what you'd expect, while others might leave you scratching your head. Here in Connecticut, the title goes to the timber rattlesnake.

If you've lived in Connecticut for any length of time, you've probably heard about timber rattlesnakes, even if you've never actually seen one. That's because they're incredibly elusive. While they are venomous and deserve plenty of respect, they generally avoid people and are far more interested in getting away than picking a fight. Most sightings happen in remote, rocky areas of the state, and wildlife experts always recommend giving them plenty of space if you happen to come across one.

The list from World Population Review highlights the animal considered the biggest threat in each state. Across the country, there are plenty of familiar faces. Grizzly bears topped the list in states like Montana and Idaho, moose were considered the most dangerous in several northern states, and coyotes earned the top spot in places like New Jersey and Illinois. A variety of rattlesnakes and other venomous snakes also dominated much of the South and West.

Even though Connecticut's most dangerous animal sounds intimidating, your chances of running into a timber rattlesnake are pretty slim. You're much more likely to encounter deer, raccoons, squirrels, or the occasional black bear than one of these protected reptiles.

Still, it's a fun reminder that Connecticut has a wild side. We may not have grizzlies roaming around or giant alligators lurking in our waterways, but we do have one of the country's most recognizable venomous snakes quietly calling parts of the Nutmeg State home.
