Good News, Connecticut: Your Doctor Probably Won’t Screw Up

When you head into the doctor’s office, you usually don’t want to think about words like “malpractice” or “payout.” You just want to get your check-up, grab your lollipop, and get out without Googling symptoms at 2 a.m. later.

But according to new research from Legacy Healing Center, Connecticut residents can breathe a little easier: our doctors are not among the worst in the country when it comes to medical mistakes.

The study looked at 20 years of medical malpractice data across the U.S., and some states are rough. We’re talking “diagnose a broken arm as the flu” rough. Connecticut, however, ranked way down at 42nd in malpractice payouts per 1,000 doctors. That means when you sit on that crinkly paper and wait for your doctor to walk in, the odds are pretty good they’ll get it right.

For perspective, the states where doctors are most likely to make mistakes are:

1. Wyoming
2. New Mexico
3. Louisiana
4. New Jersey
5. Kansas

On the flip side, the states where doctors are least likely to mess up are:

1. Wisconsin - The state with the least mistakes according to the study
2. Minnesota
3. North Carolina
4.Alabama
5. North Dakota
6. Vermont
7. Ohio
8. Virginia
9. Connecticut - We did it! We're ninth best at NOT butchering people, WOO-HOO!
10. Colorado

So yes, Connecticut sneaks into the “safest” list. Not too shabby. Next time you gripe about waiting too long for your appointment or about how your co-pay costs more than your car insurance, remember: here in Connecticut, the odds are in your favor.

Because hey — things could always be worse. Imagine going in for a routine check-up and coming out with your big toe stitched to your forehead. That would be weird, right?
