Connecticut DCP Issues Consumer Alert Following Charity Donation Bin Investigation
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has issued a consumer alert to remind residents to do our research before donating goods to the thousands of charity donations bins around the state following a recent investigation that uncovered over a hundred non-compliant bins.

As pure as it seems to donate your unwanted goods to a worthy cause or organization, there are plenty of folks looking to take advantage of the most charitable of us. The Connecticut DCP's Investigations Division has been out there taking a close look at many bins recently, and they've discovered many that have not been properly registered with the state, and some do not donate the items or revenue to the charity advertised on the bin.
During their recent investigation, which took place during the holiday season, investigators discovered 120 non-compliant bins throughout Connecticut, and the CT DCP has issued 23 tickets for issues like improper labeling, missing registration, or lack of permission from property owners. Fines of up to $500 for violations may be issued. The following companies have racked up the most violations, so far:
- ACR Trading
- LB Trading
- Baystate Book Company
- AFAB Recycling
- God's Hand YC LLC
The bins in the photo above are in my hometown of Torrington in the corner of Torrington Plaza, they are clothing & shoe collecting bins branded with NEOA - Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association, and clearly labeled 'Donations are not for a charity purpose'. Connecticut state law states that collection bins must clearly display if the bin is or is not for a charitable purpose, the name of the nonprofit and if it will receive a percentage, name and contact info, and a notice to contact CT DCP for more info. If you find a bin that you may have doubts about, email dcp.investigations@ct.gov.
