If you're a Connecticut resident that's been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the term "Cancel Rent" resonates with you, this may be your lucky day.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has just announced that the state has created a new state program dubbed UniteCT that aims to distribute Connecticut's $235 million share of the 25 billion dollars from the December 2020 stimulus package. You may be eligible to receive up to $10,000 in rental assistance and up to $1,500 in utility assistance to qualified Connecticut households.

The $235 million dollars has already been appropriated to help different problems that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused: $5 million dollars will go to renters who were facing eviction before the pandemic, $5.8 million will go towards housing people exiting homelessness, or incarceration, $26.7 million will go towards providing short-term rental assistance, $10 million will go towards homeowner mortgage relief, and finally, $3 million will be given to those who are excluded from Federal assistance due to their immigration status.

Lamont said -

"UniteCT provides Connecticut tenants and landlords a much-needed fresh start and further assistance so our families can get back on their feet without worrying about the roof over their heads. The pandemic exacerbated a national housing affordability crisis, especially for families of color who are more likely to rent their homes and more likely to have missed payments through no fault of their own. I applaud Connecticut's Congressional delegation and the Biden-Harris administration for providing the resources required to keep our families safely housed"
