Brookfield First Selectman Aims to Protect Dwindling Green Space

Recently, we learned that Brookfield First Selectman Tara Carr is actively putting measures into place to ensure the town's future is not all concrete and metal. We spoke to Carr on the I-95 Morning Show Tuesday (1/17/23) and asked her what initiative her office is most excited about and open space was at the top of the list. Carr had this to say:

"One of my ultimate primary goals and I've been saying it for the last 12 months, is to try and save whatever green space we have left. And what I mean by that is we have very little forested areas left in the Town of Brookfield unfortunately. If you look at maps of the Planning Commission from, say thirty, forty years ago we had a lot of green space. And, now we have limited acreage left that we can save. So, I'm working together with the Northwest Land Conservation Commission out of Kent to try to procure forty five acres initially and then some additional land down the road. And that will attach some of our existing open space to this remaining forest. So, I really want to see that happen and it needs to happen."

I wanted to know how bad the open space issue is and asked Carr if she had any comparative stats to share. She said that WESTCOG (Western Connecticut Council of Governments) says 11 towns in the region have more open space and just 7 of them have less.

Carr then showed off her deft sense of humor remarking, "we need to do it so the moose don't go to the AMC Movie Theater parking lot." The remark was in reference to a viral local news story from 2022.

A Curious Excursion in an Underground Brookfield Tunnel

Recently, I was having a discussion with a friend of mine, I told this person I'd accessed some caves and tunnels in my hometown of Brewster, NY which is just over the NY/CT State Line. He knows how much I love local history, and saw how excited I was about this journey. He told me there was an area of Brookfield, CT that I needed to see, one that most residents have never seen. He told me about a tunnel, one that was not far away from where we were sitting. I made note of the conversation and bookmarked the destination for a future trip.
