Do you give your pocket change to those who ask for it? Do you donate your time to help others? A new study has just been released that ranks the most compassionate cities in America for 2026, and New England's largest has landed near the top.
According to WalletHub.com's Most Caring Cities in America (2026). Boston is the second-most compassionate city in America. The only city that beat Boston in WalletHub's study was Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to their research, Boston residents donate more money online per capita than anywhere else in the US. Boston is also the fourth most energy efficient city in the country, the US's third best city at sheltering the homeless, and the second-best city at keeping its residents insured.

In order to determine which American cities cared for it's residents the most or least, WalletHub compared the 100 most populated cities in America across three key dimensions: Caring for the Community, Caring for the Vulnerable, and Caring in the Workforce. WalletHub then evaluated those dimensions using 38 relevant metrics: Violent Crime Rate, Property Crime Rate, Care for the Environment, Civic Engagement, Share of Income Donated to Charity, Child and Adult Poverty Rates, Pet Shelters and Rescues per capita, Disability-Friendliness of Employers, and Firefighters and Paramedics per capita.
No cities in Connecticut made the list, or anywhere else in New England besides Boston. The Top 5 cities according to WalletHub: Virginia Beach, Boston, Scottsdale and Gilbert, Arizona, and Fremont, California. New York City ranked at #15, while the last caring cities for 2026 in WalletHub's study were Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Birmingham, Alabama
